Facebook User Numbers
Still Growing

Alison Piroe

After 2 decades at the top, Facebook is still growing, even if it is slowly.

20 years after the social media networks inception, its user numbers are still growing, although this growth has continued to slow in recent years.

Facebook’s staying power has indeed been impressive, and user numbers are still technically growing, but with some nuances to consider:

Technically Growing:

  • As of the third quarter of 2023, Facebook reported 3.049 billion monthly active users, which is an increase from 2.91 billion a year prior.

  • Daily active users are also up, reaching 2.09 billion, a 5% year-over-year increase.

However, there are some caveats:

  • The growth rate is slowing down. While user numbers are still increasing, the percentage increase is smaller than in previous years.

  • Facebook stopped reporting user numbers after Q3 2023, making it harder to track future growth.

  • There are concerns about user engagement, particularly among younger demographics who are shifting towards platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

After 2 decades, it's impressive that it’s still accurate to say that Facebook user numbers are still technically growing, but the growth is slowing down and there are questions about how sustainable it is.

Here are some sources for digging deeper into the numbers:

Affiliate Flash’s Take:

While giants rarely stop growing entirely, Facebook's user base expansion is showing signs of plateauing. So, what does this mean for affiliate marketers who rely on the platform? Don't panic! Here's why the slowdown actually presents exciting opportunities:

1. Quality over Quantity: With slowing user growth, Facebook prioritizes engagement and retention. This translates to more active and targeted users for your campaigns.

2. Niche Down, Rule the Roost: Facebook's algorithm favors targeted content. This is your chance to dominate specific niches with laser-focused campaigns. Research, tailor, and conquer!

3. The Future is Personalization: Facebook's pushing personalized experiences. Use this to your advantage! Craft hyper-relevant content and offers that resonate deeply with your audience. Make it relevant.

4. Embrace the Meta-verse: Meta owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Think beyond just Facebook and explore cross-platform campaigns for maximum reach and impact. Multi-pronged attack wins!

5. Be Adaptable, Be Nimble: The social media landscape is dynamic. This slowdown is a nudge to experiment with new strategies and platforms. Explore TikTok, leverage YouTube, and diversify your reach.
