UN Passes First
Global Resolution on AI

Alison Piroe

Last week the UN passed a global resolution on AI, but what does this mean for affiliates?

The United Nations General Assembly took a historic step on March 21, 2024, by adopting the first-ever global resolution on artificial intelligence (AI). This non-binding resolution, spearheaded by the United States and co-sponsored by over 123 member states, signifies a unified international effort to ensure AI development is "safe, secure, and trustworthy."

The resolution underscores the need for international collaboration to establish guidelines for the responsible design, deployment, and use of AI. This comes amidst growing concerns surrounding the potential downsides of AI, including:

  • Privacy violations: The resolution emphasizes the importance of robust data protection measures to safeguard personal information used in AI development and operation.

  • Algorithmic bias: The text highlights the need for transparency and fairness in AI systems to prevent discriminatory outcomes.

  • Weaponization of AI: The resolution calls for responsible use of AI in military applications to mitigate risks of autonomous weapons and unintended harm.

The resolution also recognizes the vast potential of AI to contribute to achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on issues like healthcare, climate change, and poverty reduction. This international framework aims to promote responsible AI development that fosters innovation while mitigating potential risks.

While the resolution itself is not legally binding, it represents a significant step towards establishing international norms for AI governance. The coming months will likely see member states working together to develop specific guidelines based on the principles outlined in the resolution.

Affiliate Flash’s Take:

The UN's first global resolution on AI has broad implications, and the effects on affiliate marketing are still unfolding. Here's a breakdown of potential areas of impact:

Transparency and Disclosure: The emphasis on transparency in AI systems could influence how affiliate marketing platforms operate.  Algorithmic recommendations that power product suggestions for affiliates might need to be more transparent, allowing users to understand the reasoning behind product picks.

Data Privacy:  The resolution's focus on data protection could impact how affiliate marketers collect and use consumer information. This might lead to stricter data collection practices and a focus on first-party data.

It's important to note that the resolution is still new, and the specific regulations impacting affiliate marketing will depend on how individual member states interpret and implement the guidelines.

However, the emphasis on responsible AI development suggests that affiliate marketing practices that rely on opaque algorithms or potentially biased data collection might face increased scrutiny. By focusing on transparency, user trust, and responsible data practices, affiliate marketers can adapt and thrive in this evolving landscape.
